Lesson Assignments & Practice Logs

One of the first things I tell my students when they first start lessons with me is that each week I will provide them with a written “flute prescription”. It is simple, you do what it says on the sheet and you will get better at the flute- just like a medical prescription helps your health improve. BUT you must follow the prescription as indicated and follow through with the necessary instructions (i.e. practice consistently).

At this point I have 4 different version of my “Flute Prescription Cards”, and they are all free to download :) In addition to giving the students clear practice goals, it also helps me in future lessons (I have a horrible memory!).

  1. For advanced students enrolled in a class: (Page 1) This has a side for a grade and then the other side is for next week’s assignment. I always have the student hand me the sheet from last week and then I can see not only what I assigned last week, but also what we didn’t get to the previous week or what issues came up. I have provided this as a Word document so you can modify it to fit your studio.

  2. For intermediate/advanced students not enrolled in a class: (Page 2) This just eliminates the “grade” portion and allows for more room to write.

  3. Practice Logs/Assignment sheet for younger students: I have never liked practice logs- not as a student and not as a teacher. If the student has done the work I will hear it in the lesson. But younger students can benefit from the visual feedback of a chart which is why I created my sticker charts. Students can color them in, or you can get these stickers to make it extra easy/fun : )

  4. For adults or anyone: This is an intentions chart. It doesn’t work well for weekly assignments, but if you have adult students it can help them practice more consistently. I use this in my own life for non-flute goals too- fitness, cleaning routines, etc. Anything that you want to be more consistent about this is a good way to track it. This idea came from James Clear’s advice in Atomic Habits: about not missing twice in a row. We are all busy, stuff happens, but don’t let yourself go more than a day without meeting your goals. You can get these stickers to use or use your favorite colored pencils/pens.
